Last week the Consorci Sanitari Integral won the @asLAN for Digital Transformation in Public Administrations and Organisations, in the “Analytics for Decision Making” category for its use of telemedicine and Chatbots (artificial intelligence which engages in chat) for Major Outpatient Surgery (MOS). The prize was presented to the project’s designer, Meritxell Davins, Consorci Sanitari Integral’s Head of eHealth and Innovation, and Javier Grueso, the Director of Information Systems.
A Chatbot is a system based on artificial intelligence which responds to a user’s questions with natural language and which can improve its responses thanks to a technology called Machine Learning. Chatbots are intended to improve safety and satisfaction both for doctors and patients.
MOS patients use a mobile application (app) which is connected to the health administration’s enterprise software. Before surgery, they receive preoperative information and advice, together with the date and the type of surgery. the week following the operation, the patient’s progress is checked on a daily basis by means of a questionnaire made up of decision trees that can alert the Outpatient Surgery Unit, who will manage the case as needed. In addition, the patient has the support of a chatbot, which can answer any questions they may have. This means the monitoring of patients is improved and they are better-informed, while telephone calls are used only when necessary. It is expected that the project will be launched shortly, with the conditions chosen in the first phase are to be varicose veins and hernias.
