As of May 20, 2024, the new Regulation (UE) 2024/1183, known as eIDAS 2, has come into effect. This regulation represents significant advances in electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions across Europe. This new regulatory framework marks a step forward in building a safer and more accessible digital space for all EU citizens.
eIDAS 2 Regulation updates and replaces the previous eIDAS legal framework, establishing a unified digital identity system within the European Union. This regulatory change aims to improve access to both public and private services, increase interoperability and the adoption of digital solutions, and strengthen the security of digital identities.
One of the most notable innovations is the introduction of the European Digital Identity Wallet (e-ID Wallet), a mobile app that will allow EU citizens and residents to securely manage their digital identities. This wallet will facilitate access to a variety of services in any member state, including opening bank accounts and accessing health information during travels or stays in other EU countries.
Furthermore, the regulation seeks to enhance interoperability among member states, ensuring that digital identities and electronic signatures are recognized across borders. Data protection and information security measures have also been increased, with stricter requirements for service providers and the incorporation of advanced technologies such as cryptography and multi-factor authentication.
Another key aspect of eIDAS 2 is the expansion of trust services, which now include website authentication and services related to the preservation of electronic information, among others. This represents significant support for the digital economy, by simplifying regulations and enhancing trust in electronic transactions.
The regulation also establishes transitional provisions until 2027, allowing certain devices and certificates to continue being considered qualified while the transition to the new system is completed.
