The TIC Salut Social Foundation publishes the Catalan Extension of SNOMED CT 2022

The Interoperability and Technologies team at the TIC Salut Social Foundation has published the Catalan Extension of SNOMED CT 2022, which is the globally accepted clinical terminology standard in the field of health. The publication follows all the criteria set by SNOMED International and one of the new aspects is the inclusion of new reference sets in the social and health field.

SNOMED CT is an international collaborative standard designed specifically for electronic health information exchange and for recording and sharing clinical data. In other words, using this standard allows health systems and centres around the world to interpret data in the same way. It standardises the terminology used to present the information in an appropriate, precise and unambiguous way, and to achieve semantic interoperability between all of the parties involved in the different processes.

The Catalan extension of SNOMED CT 2022 contains all of the concepts, descriptions and relationships in Catalan and Spanish used in the region, as well as the different reference sets used in a wide range of areas of Catalan health and social care.

SNOMED CT reference centre in Catalonia

Since 2011, the Interoperability and Technologies team at the TIC Salut Social Foundation has been the SNOMED CT National Reference Centre in Catalonia. It is therefore responsible for maintaining and updating the Catalan Extension and reference sets, in accordance with the needs of the Catalan Health System. The Director of Digital Transformation at the TIC Salut Social Foundation, Fernando Leeson, said that “the Foundation is at the disposal of all health and social professionals who have questions about the Catalan Extension of SNOMED CT”. At the same time, Leeson thanked the different working groups for their active participation in the 2022 publication: “the publication not only offers valuable linguistic content for the system, but also includes groups of concepts made in collaboration with working groups of clinical and social professionals from different centres in Catalonia based on their needs”.

The new update of the Catalan Extension of SNOMED CT includes aspects such as subsets of terms related to pathological anatomy, microbiology techniques, cancer screening, antibiotics, neurological examination, allergic disorders, mHealth, and social risk factors and responses.
