Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by the limitation of chronic respiratory flow. This loss of respiratory flow is progressive and is associated with inflammation of the lungs by regular exposure to particles or harmful gases that act as irritants of the lungs. The most characteristic symptoms are dyspnoea, cough and sputum secretion.

Although it is a pathology that can prevent and have treatment, hospitalizations and re-entry as a result of exacerbations (sudden worsening of the symptoms of the disease) constitute most of the welfare cost.

With the objective of providing new tools for the treatment of this respiratory pathology, EMPOC was born, framed in the Digital Patient Experience (DPaX) line, a project that, driven by Grupo Pulso, GSK, the TIC Social Health Foundation and the participation of the CAPSBE – CAP Comte Borrell- wants to define a new technological ecosystem based on the patient's experience. It aims to increase the empowerment of the citizen, the patient COPD and carers, through an innovative solution based on support services and telemonitoring through mobile technology. Therefore, the patient is the center of attention and the analysis of current treatments to be able to rethink the use of resources and services for their benefit.

The project, which began in February, is composed of two phases: the first one analyzes unmet needs of patients. It defines a case of use, identifies the route that the patient is currently following, 'patient journey', and from the needs detected, new technological solutions are proposed; The second phase consists in the development, pilot and evaluation of the technological solution for a subsequent scalability of the results.

The first phase of the project is currently finalizing and the second will begin next 2018, with the beginning of the execution of the pilots from the first quarter.

Presence at the XPatient Congress of Barcelona

In this context, the XPatient Congress took place in Barcelona on September 14th. The TIC Social Health Foundation was part of the organizing committee together with EURECAT and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. The EMPOC project was presented by Dr. Mireia Sans-territorial leader of the project and director of CAP Comte Borrell, where the pilot phase will be deployed.

The central axes of this congress were three: the evaluation and improvement of the experiences of the users through the empowerment of the patients and caregivers; the promotion of participatory procedures and co-creation between patients and professionals; and technology at the service of the patient as an interaction tool to support the self-management of diseases.
Three vertebrating axes with which the EMPOC project is perfectly aligned.
