The Catalan Health Service publishes the update of the Catalan extension of SNOMED CT 2025

The 2025 update of the Catalan extension of SNOMED CT is now available. SNOMED CT is a key standard for ensuring interoperability across the health and social care system in Catalonia. Its development is carried out jointly with health and social care professionals and follows the criteria set by SNOMED International to guarantee consistency and information quality.

The evolution of the extension takes place in collaboration with clinical working groups from SISCAT and professional working groups from the Catalan Social Services System, involving different profiles and roles. These working groups help identify and prioritise the real terminological needs of the territory. Thanks to this coordinated work, the terminology is adapted to care processes and remains aligned with both the international versions and the national extension maintained by the Spanish Ministry of Health.

Coinciding with the update, a new webpage has been launched to centralise all available information and resources related to the Catalan extension of SNOMED CT. It also includes the application form for requesting access to the downloads area, as well as a corporate email address for queries or requests related to its use in Catalonia.

Intersocial, new concepts and descriptions for 2025

This year, the Catalan extension of SNOMED CT includes 243 new concepts, each with their corresponding descriptions and relationships. A total of 58,636 new descriptions have been created—most of them to provide Catalan translations of existing concepts. In addition, 360 new relationships between concepts have been established, and the subsets have been updated. Of these descriptions, the InterSocial project—supported by the foundation—now contributes a total of 560 entries to the terminological dictionary.

The Catalan extension makes it possible to translate concepts into Catalan, to incorporate new terms quickly, and to create concepts specific to the care needs of our context. It also includes nearly sixty subsets used across multiple health and social care environments. All of this is published in coordination with both the national and international extensions.

As announced during the presentation of Catalonia’s digital health strategy, this integration within the Catalan Health Service portal reflects the shared vision of the Department of Health, the Catalan Health Service and the TIC Salut Social Foundation to build a care model supported by robust and integrated information systems.

Un alineament institucional que impulsa la transformació digital del sistema de salut mitjançant l’ús de terminologies estandarditzades per oferir dades de qualitat i coherents entre els diferents actors i professionals de l’ecosistema sanitari.

This institutional alignment drives the digital transformation of the health system through the use of standardised terminologies, ensuring high-quality, consistent data across the various actors and professionals within the healthcare ecosystem.
