Miriam M\u00e9ndez<\/b>, Head of <\/span>Research and Innovation at the Health Data Protection Officer\u2019s Office of the TIC Salut and Social Foundation<\/b>, took part in the <\/span>5th International Congress of the Ibero-American Network International Association of Bioethics (IAB)<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event was held at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Cl\u00ednic Campus, University of Barcelona<\/b><\/span>, where she participated in the panel discussion \u201cUnresolved bioethical issues in the evaluation of research and innovation in health based on artificial intelligence, genetic technologies and personal data\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The debate focused on a key aspect for advancing digital innovation in healthcare: <\/span>how pilot projects using technological tools that process health data should be classified<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several scenarios were discussed: treating them as <\/span>research projects involving data processing<\/b>, as <\/span>activities with healthcare purposes<\/b>, or as a <\/span>hybrid category between research and healthcare practice<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each classification carries different regulatory implications<\/b><\/span> in terms of data protection and ethical compliance.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Embedding data protection from the design phase to strengthen technological robustness and scalability<\/b><\/h2>\n

In her presentation, M\u00e9ndez explained that the <\/span>development of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions<\/b> follows several stages: the <\/span>design and training phase<\/b>, <\/span>validation and testing in controlled environments<\/b>, and finally <\/span>deployment or scaling in real healthcare settings<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At each stage, <\/span>ethical requirements, legal obligations and mechanisms to ensure privacy and responsible data use<\/b> can vary considerably.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, it is essential to <\/span>integrate data protection principles and ethical safeguards from the outset of each project<\/b>, not only to ensure regulatory compliance but also to <\/span>optimise resources, reduce costs and guarantee that the final technological product is robust, reliable and scalable within the healthcare ecosystem<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The participation of the <\/span>Health Data Protection Officer\u2019s Office<\/b> in this congress exemplifies <\/span>Catalonia\u2019s commitment, as a European region, to fostering innovative processes aligned with the current complex European regulatory framework<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
