We are expecting around 300 attendees, made up of health care professionals, experts in medical informatics, care providers, researchers, authorities, regulators, and service provider organizations. <strong>Our goal is to build awareness of the actual state of semantic interoperability<\/strong> and continue the discussions we started during the HIGHmed Symposium in October 2021 in value and competitive advantage. Specifically, it can offer tremendous opportunities to improve the quality of care and financial performance.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The idea of \u201c<i>pushing information and knowledge to the point where health decisions are made, so the right decision can be made at the right time<\/i>\u201d was introduced back in year 2001 in the report titled \u201cInformation for Health: A Strategy for Building the National Health Information Infrastructure\u201d and published by the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (United States of America). Earlier that year, the seminal report \u201cCrossing the Quality Chasm\u201d was published by the American Institute of Medicine calling for fundamental changes in health delivery with the main objective to improve the quality of care.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Together, these two reports provided a roadmap going forward in how to improve both clinical care and public health by investing in information infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Twenty years after, even though governments, health authorities, service provider organizations and industry have invested huge efforts, time and money, the truth is we are still far away from unlocking the power of these data.\u00a0 Action needs to be taken if we have to get real value out of data in healthcare.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But which are the barriers that prevent us from systematically harnessing health data?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The scientific literature is full of references that point us in different directions. Privacy rules and regulations that hinder the effective usage of personal health information, the lack of unique patient identifiers that prevents appropriately linking different sources of health information, the lack of standardized care processes that limit the ability to benchmark across healthcare providers, the difficulties to link informational systems with transactional systems to deliver real-time or near real-time insights or the difficulties in integrating data from heterogeneous patient sources are some of the factors that prevent us achieving the goal of gaining control of health data.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Further to the previous, a major problem that has been identified by many authors is the one related to the semantic interoperability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But where do we stand now in terms of semantic interoperability?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The truth is that we are far away from it. Individual\u2019s health data are stored in millions of heterogeneous information systems sustained on proprietary data models that remain hidden to the ecosystem. Individuals across the world cannot understand why after so many years and millions of public money spent their data does not properly flow wherever is needed. Action needs to be taken and the moment is now.
