A monitored process
A technological platform assists the patient throughout the process during their learning period, supported by a professional, both on-site and telematically. The patient completes surveys telematically and the system can alert them about a given circumstance or can recommend them to visit their physician, which can also be made telematically. 150 patients with intermittent claudication have taken part in the study, 75 controls and 75 have used the technological platform. From January 2016 on the number of patients with intermittent claudication registered in the Hospital de Mataró Program will increase.
Intermittent claudication, a disease with growing prevalence
Population ageing, derived from a rise in life expectancy, has increased the number of chronic illnesses. These conditions have become the primary cause of death among the adult population in developed countries and its incidence increases each year. It is an increasing health, social and economic problem. In people over 65, 20% of the population suffers from a peripheral arterial disease, and 6% from intermittent claudication, which is an advanced stage of this condition. At this point it should be noted that one of the results of this process of self-responsibility of the patient is an improvement in the use of the resources assigned to care.
